Remembering the ANZACs

Years 6-12 students honoured our ANZAC legacy with an assembly on the first day back of Term 2.

Students read the poem ‘For the Fallen’, by Laurence Binyon. They also spoke of the disparity between the benefits that were given to non-Indigenous soldiers returning from the Great War and Indigenous soldiers who served alongside these men yet were denied benefits and entry to RSLs. We heard ‘The Last Post’, and ‘The Reveille’, expertly played by Josh Yates.

Coordinator of Experiential Learning Josh New gave a link between ANZAC Day and Yom HaZikaron and asked us to think about what it means to be both Australian and Jewish. Teacher Gordon Dorin also spoke about what it means to be Jewish and Australian for him, and how he realised the value of his Jewish education once he was on Kibbutz in Israel in his late 20s.
