Chicken soup for Shabbat

At one of our mat sessions discussing what songs to sing at our end of the year Shabbat, the Junior Kindergarten children chose ‘Chicken Soup’. We then decided the best way to learn this song is to experience it by actually making a chicken soup. 

Before our excursion, we brainstormed together what ingredients we would need to buy at the supermarket before writing it down on paper.

On our supermarket trip day, the children excitedly chatted away as they waved at the passing trams and the cars that stopped at the red light. Once there, we carefully observed the vegetables on display and decided to also add a sweet potato and broccoli to our ingredient list. We were so thankful that it didn’t rain during our excursion. This also gave us the opportunity to visit the school kibbutz and see the potato plants and growing corn plants as well as our carrots. Some of the children tasted silverbeets which they asked for more.

Throughout this experience, the children worked on their working memory as they recalled our 10 ingredients that they had purchased from the supermarket, their organisational skills as they first washed their hands before chose the correct cooking tools to use, practiced their fine motor skills when cutting and peeling the vegetables, and patiently waited to harvest our carrots (which we planted in Term 2).

Once the soup was ready, we enjoyed it with mini croutons. Yum!
