Celebrating Lag BaOmer together

Late last week, students across the school celebrated Lag BaOmer. On Thursday evening, many students from Years 6 – 12 gathered around a toasty bonfire to celebrate Lag BaOmer. The afternoon began with an explanation of Lag BaOmer and its significance, as well as some of the customs and ideas associated with the day. Students then broke off into a variety Chuggim (activities) including bracelet making and rock decorating, before returning to the bonfire while the sun set for roasted marshmallows, cinnamon apples, hot chocolate and a open mic sing-along. We concluded the evening with S’firat HaOmer – counting the Omer. – Josh New, Coordinator of Jewish Experiential Learning

At the Dandenong Road Campus, ELC students had a bonfire, with roasted kosher marshmallows. Together with Nissim they sang Lag BaOmer songs. Junior School students gathered around the fire pit to celebrate Lag BaOmer in a cosy and joyful atmosphere. Students listened to captivating stories about Rabbi Akiva and Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai while enjoying delicious baked potatoes fresh from the coals. They also had a go at archery with an excellent demonstration by our Director of Jewish Life and Learning Ilan Bloch and discovered the hidden meanings in Hebrew through the playful world of Gematria. – Sophie Oppenheimer, Team Leader Jewish Life P-5
