Tackling real-world challenges for Project Slingshot
This term, our Year 7 cohort took part in the exciting annual Project Slingshot competition. Project Slingshot is a fast-paced, hands-on program that gives students a taste of entrepreneurial skills while tackling real-world challenges. The two-day incursion encourages students to think innovatively and put into practice the key skills of creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and communication.
Over the course of the program, students worked in teams to design, build, test, and present a variety of projects. One of the highlights was creating intricate Rube Goldberg machines, where the challenge was to complete a simple task in the most imaginative and complicated way possible. These machines were as chaotic as they were clever, and they gave students the chance to problem-solve under pressure while having a lot of fun.
Another unforgettable moment was the famous duct tape fashion parade. Teams were tasked with designing and modelling outfits made entirely from duct tape and cardboard. The results were both hilarious and impressive, showcasing just how inventive our year level can be when given the freedom to experiment with unusual materials.
Reflecting on Project Slingshot, it’s clear that the competition was more than just a series of activities — it was an opportunity to stretch students’ thinking, to collaborate and feed ideas off one another, and learn that taking risks and being creative often lead to the most rewarding outcomes. It was a challenging program, but also one that brought plenty of laughter and memorable moments along the way.
