The Bowater Trust Medal (formerly known as the Bowater Medal and HS Archdall Medal) has been awarded each year since 1988 to a graduate who has achieved academic excellence in the Bachelor of Commerce or Bachelor of Management degree together with outstanding performance in a major offered by the School of Management and Marketing. Short listed students are invited to submit a proposal to be considered for this award. Final selection is made on the basis of academic records and interview.
Members of the Bowater Trust, together with staff of the School of Management and Marketing, extend their congratulations to Rachel Krasky, winner of the 2012 Bowater Trust Medal.
Rachel completed a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Marketing and Public Relations and was included on the Dean’s Merit List for 2012. Rachel was also inducted as a member of the Golden Key International Honour Society in 2009, and is also the recipient of the 2012 School of Management and Marketing prize for outstanding achievement in a marketing major.
Rachel views the Bachelor of Commerce offered by Deakin as a positive experience with the practical component being highly valuable. She enjoyed the Deakin community as well as the commitment and support provided by lecturers and tutors. Her third year in particular was a highlight receiving straight high distinctions for all the subjects she completed.
Rachel believes the University provided a strong opportunity to balance both theory and practical experience. She was awarded two internships at Tennis Australia and Thrive PR throughout her degree and also spent a year volunteering in St Kilda Football Club’s marketing department, which provided priceless experience to help kick start her career. On top of her internships, Rachel also worked casually as a basketball coach to juniors and at Richmond Football Club.
In addition to her studies and part time employment, Rachel still managed to be involved in many areas during her time at the University, including being part of the Deakin Commerce Society, representing Deakin in their basketball team for two years and as part of the Deakin AUJS General Executive team, working on activities to involve other Deakin students on a weekly basis. Rachel believes these experiences added a dimension to her degree and provided different skills sets and opportunities.
Rachel believes her positive experiences at Deakin University, and the excellent academic results she was able to achieve, were instrumental in helping her obtain a fulltime position with one of the largest brands in the world – Nike. Rachel obtained the position of PR Coordinator at Nike Australia with two months to go in her degree.
Rachel believes the faulty of Management and Marketing provided a fantastic experience along with the tools and knowledge to tackle a long-term career in the marketing industry. Rachel looks forward to remaining involved with Deakin University and encouraging others to see the value and opportunities that exist in the School of Management and Marketing.
