Chag Pesach Sameach!

Our students have been engaged across the School, learning the Pesach story and rituals in the lead up to Pesach. Model sedarim were held from Kinder through to Year 5 while the Senior School students engaged in interactive Pesach activities. Gan Keshet children at the Pre-School will host families next week for their model seder.

Soulful experience at Back to School Service

Our student leadership body, the Hanhaga, planned and led yesterday’s Back to School Service at TBI with meaningful prayer, reflection, song and dance. Years 6 to 12 students heard inspirational messages from Marc Light and Sidra Moshinsky (our Director of Jewish Life and Learning) as well as profound reflections from two VCE students (Maddie Meltzer and Ella Benary-Belfer). Meaningful Jewish experiences in Kinder

During our Hebrew lessons in the Junior Kindergarten, we have been learning about our Jewish identity and what it means to be Jewish. This has been done by creating meaningful and relevant experiential Jewish experiences.

Exploring family history – Kabbalat Dorot

A significant project Year 6 students are involved in is Kabbalat Dorot. This semester long project where students explore their family history, places investigative skills at the centre of their learning. Students were encouraged to construct as much as possible about their family’s Jewish choices and experiences over the generations. Each Jewish story is part of a broader historical context and students are encouraged to consider what broader factors may give insights into their family’s story.

Year 7 Kabbalat Torah

The Kabbalat Torah experience is an exciting milestone for our Year 7 students as part of their journey into Jewish adulthood. The Jewish custom of Bnei Mitzvah, recognises that as a child turns twelve or thirteen, they move from being a child, wholly dependent upon their parents, to a young adult, gaining independence with every new experience.

Junior Kinder Grandparents’ Shabbat

Our Junior Kinder children were bursting with excitement today as grandparents and special friends joined them to celebrate Shabbat. They showcased their impressive knowledge of the rituals and songs they learn each week in preparation for Shabbat. As Marc Light commented, at King David, we “teach Jewish in an experiential way” so that students gain a rich appreciation of our culture and traditions.

The ritual of Tashlich

The 10 days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are a time for reflection and introspection. During this time, we are required to engage in the act of “Taschlich,” meaning to “cast off,” a ritual that enables us to cast away our wrongs from the past year. Ancestry is a big part of our community. We delve into banks of information and artefacts. On Thursday last week, the Year 6s visited the Jewish Museum of Australia to learn about their pasts. A guided tour of Melbourne’s Jewish community

To launch a new Project Based Learning unit on the Melbourne’s Jewish Community, the Year 9s enjoyed a walking tour through the streets of Fitzroy and Collingwood. The tour was lead by engaging and innovative guides from ‘Localing Tours Melbourne’. Students learned about the history, development and less known contemporary stories of this grungier pocket of the inner city. This marks the beginning of a semester-long project where students will develop their own guided tour of Melbourne’s Jewish Community.
