For once, the falling rain and sharp decline in temperature did not dampen school spirit and activities on Yom Ha’Atzmaut, while take-home packs and recipes – combined with materials available on the School’s online platforms – meant that the festivities could extend well beyond the school hours and the school gate. There is a silver lining to everything!
Following moving commemorative virtual ceremonies to mark Yom HaZikaron, Israel’s memorial day for soldiers and victims of terror, the next day brought vitality, innovation and a range of ways to engage in and enjoy the first (and hopefully last) Yom Ha’Atzmaut celebrated at a distance.
Children in the ELC, the only members of the school community able to participate on site, dressed in blue and white and enjoyed various Hebrew and Israeli-themed activities, including music and crafts.
Junior School students started their day with the traditional Yom Ha’Atzmaut assembly, in which many students were able to feature through sending in short video clips. Following this, activities on offer included creating an artistic Israeli flag using recycled materials, a virtual tour of Israel and sessions with Eldad from the JNF. Throughout the day, students were invited to immerse themselves in Israeli music, cooking and dance moves, while also viewing short videos of teachers sharing ‘This Is My Israel – זאת ישראל שלי’.
Meanwhile, ‘over’ at the Senior School, the day kicked off with entertaining videos from the Hanhagah and Jewish Life team. Parallel sessions over the course of the day offered opportunities to experience Israeli life and culture through Krav Maga (Israeli martial art), innovation workshops, recreating famous iconic Israeli images, Hebrew banter, Israeli history quiz, youth group programs and much more. Featured on the JLife page were a series of videos in which members of the school community spoke about their Israel story. Lunchtime brought a live-stream party and chance to socialise online and, in keeping with tradition, a virtual Teacher-Student basketball game. The day culminated in an x-factor talent show.
