On Tuesday this week, the Year 7 cohort had a double lesson session with Mrs Mall entitled ‘Launch into Science’. Students watched a four minute inspirational video about the wonders of Science followed by a movie trailer about the curriculum, highlights and Science enrichment on offer in 2019.
Three major challenges were set that involved some degree of independent work, however, mostly collaborative. It was obvious that collaborative work helped increase the level of engagement of students and their confidence.
The lesson agenda included:
• Strategies for working collaboratively – roles/responsibility in Team Challenges
• Challenge 1: What kind of Science student are you? Mind map reflection
• Challenge 2: Significance of Science to our everyday lives
• Challenge 3: Observe, infer and hypothesize – thinking like a scientist
There were nine teams of either five or six students. Each team’s work was critiqued by Mrs Mall and awarded an overall percentage grade. One team was awarded a trophy and food prize because they received 92% for their collective challenges. This was almost 15% above a few of the other teams. Congratulations to team ‘A’ consisting of MIA LEVY, BELLA LIVNE, BOAZ ROCKMAN, NAOMI GOLDBOURT and SAMMY KATZ.
Reading each student’s mind map reflection was so insightful. Many students have only a ‘medium’ interest in Science, however, Mrs Zeenat Atcha and myself truly hope to help Year 7’s develop unbridled enthusiasm for all things Science in 2019.Share
