School Council |

| The School Council is the governing body of The King David School. The Principal is responsible for the implementation of educational philosophy and policy as discussed and approved by the Council. The Council has overall responsibility for policy and effective management of all aspects of the school, including careful financial and strategic planning. Many of those who serve on the School Council are parents, as well as professional business people who invest much of their personal time in the welfare of the school. |

Michael and his family have been associated with the school for some decades and they have continued to be strong supporters. Michael has held numerous positions on both KDS and TBI boards.
Michael is Managing Director of The Alexander Corporation a family investment and marketing company. His other interests with his family are Travel, Boating and Golf.
Lyn & Michael have 3 children, Daniel, Adam and Carina. All three have attended The King David School. |

Sandy joined the Council in 2006 and also serves as Vice President of The King David School Parents Association.
Sandy is a senior architect with Kerstin Thompson Architects where she establishes consultant teams and works on all stages of commercial, school, and institutional projects. The practice has won numerous awards for design and sustainability.
Other interests include landscape design and gardening. With the family, Sandy is keen to keep the heart rate up skiing and playing tennis.
Sandy is married to Damian and has two children at the school in Years 2 and 5. |

Jeff joined the Council in 2009 and also serves on the The King David School Finance Committee.
Jeff is Director and Shareholder of Plasticoat a privately owned manufacting and distribution company in the building and industrial market . His other interests with his family are Golf, Sport and Travel.
Joy-Ann and Jeff have 3 children, Nicky,Samantha and Jonathan. All three have and are attending The King David School. |

Lionel Appelboom joined the Council in 2003 as Hon. Secretary
A commercial lawyer since 1983, he is a Partner of Gadens
Lawyers, a national firm, mainly dealing with construction and property projects and disputes, and commercial disputes.
Lionel is a Law Institute of Vic Accredited Specialist in Commercial Litigation and has held positions on the Boards of TBI, ARZA, Kedem executive and Netzer.
Lionel is married to Libby and has three children at the school in Years 6, 9 and 11. Recreationally, he enjoys swimjming, cycling and a decent glass of red. |

Phyllis is a well-known and highly respected educational consultant with over 30 years experience gained across all sectors of education: for 10 years as a careers counsellor in secondary schools; five years at the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority as a trainer of careers teachers and as the Public Relations Manager; five years at Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC), as the Assistant Director, Administration; five years at RMIT as the Admissions Manager, Admissions then as a consultant to RMIT Training P/L and to the then Vice-Chancellor, RMIT University (Melbourne and Vietnam); and with her business partner, established a private careers consultancy with clients throughout Victoria, Australia and internationally.
Phyllis and her family are very proud and committed Progressive Jews who have been very active in the Jewish community. Phyllis served on: the Temple Beth Israel Board of Management for over 16 years, and was President from 1999-2001; the Executive of the Union for Progressive Judaism (UPJ), retiring as president after four years in November 2008; and now serves on a number committees of the World Union for Progressive Judaism (WUPJ).
Phyllis has used her expertise as a consultant to the school, most recently as a member of the Music Task Force and Jewish Life Committee.
In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends, travelling and learning. |

David Kobritz is Managing Director of Deal Corporation Pty Ltd, a private property investment and development company.
Between family and business David is kept busy - aside from an occasional holiday or horse race (David owned Subzero 1992 Melbourne Cup winner). He has been instrumental in the work of The King David School with the creation of The Magid Institute Senior School Campus and now, the potential of 520 Orrong Road, Armadale.
David has three children, Dean (21), Laurelle (18) and Jessica (12). |

Gary is the Director, Auctioneer and Co-owner of Gary Peer and Associates, a Real Estate agency.
Gary has been a congregant of T.B.I. his whole life and met his business partner of 20 years, Phillip Kingston, through one of the first Netzer camps.
Gary has recently been appointed as chairman for the Property Profile Group, formed in 1992 and is made up of 19 independent agents covering a wide area of metropolitan Melbourne. Gary Peer and Associates are proud sponsors of many local events and groups including the Ajax football club.

Jim Cyngler has served as President of the School Council since 1997 and a member of Council from 1991, when he filled the role of Chairman of Site.
A lawyer who has practised at the Victorian Bar as a Barrister since 1979, Jim specialises as an advanced mediator and trainer in mediation.
His commitment to the community has included Board positions with the World Union for Progressive Judaism Governing Body (WUPJ), Victorian Union for Progressive Judaism (VUPJ), Temple Beth Israel, B’nai Brith and Coordinating Committee for Jewish Day Schools.
His recreational interests include family, football, reading, music, films and travel. |

Michele Bernshaw grew up and was educated in Melbourne, attending the local State primary and high schools. She also attended UJEB classes until she completed her Leaving Certificate in Hebrew.
After graduating as a BA, majoring in English and History, and gaining her Diploma of Education, Michele began teaching in the State secondary system in 1972. She moved to Beth Rivkah Ladies' College in 1984 and was promoted to the position of Assistant Principal in 1990.
During 1998 Michele began her Masters in Educational Leadership.
In 1999 she fulfilled her dual role as Assistant Principal at Beth Rivkah and Curriculum Coordinator at Yeshivah College (Secondary).
At the beginning of 2000, Michele commenced duties in her current position as Principal of The King David School. One of the greatest pleasures in her current role is that many of the students of the School are the children of former pupils."

Rabbi John Levi AM DD is Emeritus Rabbi of Temple Beth Israel and one of the founders of The King David School.
The author of five books and the Vice President of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, Rabbi Levi was recently awarded a Doctor of Laws honoris causa by Monash University.
As a distinguished recipient of many honours and awards, he regards his title of grandfather of a KDS student, as the most important. |
