The King David School
  Music

The King David School has a vibrant music program that begins at Daycare. All children take part in the creating, listening and presenting of music. Activities under the guidance of the specialist teacher utilise movement, drama, art, voice and instruments to allow the children to express themselves. The conventions of music are taught, as well as the appreciation of differing styles and forms of music. Visits to concerts and shows are part of the musical appreciation program.

Parents can choose to have their children taught an instrument, or take voice lessons, at school. The School has a bank of instruments which can be hired. There are many opportunities for students to perform at assemblies, soirees, celebrations and chagim.

Music permeates classroom activities as well as being an integral part of the Hebrew and Jewish Studies program. In the Middle School Music Program students are introduced to the three key areas of musical activity. Instrument, Vocal and Kinaesthetic (rhythm experienced through body movement such as dancing, drumming etc) and small group instrumental. As well as developing musical ability, there is considerable research that suggests this activity significantly enhances literacy and numeracy skills.

In Years 5 and 6 students receive weekly group instrumental lessons as well as the use of a good quality instrument. They also have the opportunity to study voice in a small class of no more than ten students. Students studying voice in semester one will have the opportunity to study an instrument in semester 2. In addition to this, each fortnight students will take part in a class of African singing and dance.
