Middle School

Middle School

Located in the heart of Armadale, the Magid Campus is home to students from Years 3 to Year 8. Developmentally, this is a natural grouping of year levels – it is during this period that students begin to form their “adult personality” and grow more independent. While students assume more responsibilities in their personal lives, King David also gives them the chance to develop important leadership skills through the Moetzet (Student Representative Council) and House System—skills that will serve them well in the future.

Once a historic Victorian mansion, the campus contains computer centres, arts studios, a library and science laboratories. Other facilities include a Music School, sports ground and basketball court. The campus is easily accessible by bus, tram and train.

Middle School   Curriculum

King David offers a wide and diverse range of subjects to Middle School students. The core curriculum consists of English, Hebrew, Mathematics, Jewish Studies, Spanish, French, PE, Science, Studies of Society and the Environment, Information Technology, Art, Drama, Music, Materials Technology, System Technology and Visual Communication. King David’s dedication to small class sizes means students are able to work closely with their teachers to achieve their maximum potential. Students seeking additional challenges can participate in the Enrichment program – and even become competitors in the prestigious Inter School ‘Tournament of the Minds’!

Special programs

Leadership is a journey – that’s why the Middle School Connections Program focuses on the learning of leadership and life skills. At the Magid Campus, the curriculum is supported by a dynamic program designed to enable students to emerge from Middle School with a toolkit for learning. Students become aware of their personal learning styles, learn to deal with others, become resilient, develop conflict resolution skills and become active members of the Jewish and Australian community.

As part of the Connections Program, each student is a member of a Personal Development club for one semester. Some of the many club options available include a student newspaper, social outreach, Israeli dancing, chess, film studies and debating.

No single program better illustrates King David’s motto, A Unique School of Thought, than the Night of the Unique Thinkers. In Year 8, students delve into their own intelligences to define their individual learning styles—then study and present an eminent personality who shares their style. It’s a creative, innovative program that develops independent research skills and helps students identify relevant role-models.

Another important part of the Middle School program is to recognise the importance of the milestone B’nei Mitzvah year with a special celebratory synagogue service. Boys and girls in Year 7 participate equally in the rituals, prayer leading and organisation of the proceedings, in keeping with the philosophy of Progressive Judaism and experiential learning. Families and the King David community are invited to share this special event.
