The King David School
  Jewish Life

Students are encouraged to view themselves as Jewish and Australian, and both sides of their heritage are actively promoted through the School curriculum. But how does one develop a strong Jewish identity within today’s fast-paced, increasingly globalised world?

From Pre-School level, King David students are able to discuss issues of faith and tradition in a contemporary context. Jewish festivals and values are fully integrated into the School curriculum, Hebrew is offered at all levels and Yiddish is taught from Year 7 to 12. Daily prayer and synagogue services are an integral part of the School curricula. The School aims to build a Jewish ethic within an Australian context.

In addition to the study of Jewish history and texts, the School’s Jewish Studies program involves activities within the wider community. Students participate in Jewish communal events such as Yom Ha’atzma’ut (Israeli Independence Day), Yom Hazikaron (Israeli Memorial Day) and Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Commemoration). They are able to compete against other Jewish students through the B’nei Brith Art Show and Music Competition, and through interschool Jewish sports.

The School’s expanding international profile has made it a favoured visiting place for overseas visitors. Israeli religious leaders and academics speak to our students on issues of contemporary concern and enhance students’ knowledge of their culture and traditions. Israeli student leaders add to the School’s Zionist connections through activities and seminars.

Diverse programs such as the Year 10 Zionist Camp and the Southwick Kibbutz combine the practical, theological and cultural aspects of being Jewish in today’s society. To complement its Jewish Studies and Hebrew programs, the School has created the Yesh Israel trip, a three week journey through Israel which gives students the opportunity to see Jerusalem for themselves and engage with Israeli students their own age.
